Training Tip Tuesday – Put Your Feet Up

Well mum is making this sound easy…. Put your feet up Bodhi…. In fact it has been anything but.

While the step up last week was pretty easy. Hey I’ve practiced the manoeuvre before when toddler step stool is left in the kitchen and I need to watch when mum is doing on Foodie Friday.

Busted

But it turns out getting my back legs only on the stool is a bit more problematic.

Mum’s interest in teaching this, as always, comes back to her thinking I need awareness of my bum. The thinking is that if I can put those back paws up on a stool than I know where my back paws and bum are. This then comes back to getting my bum and back legs over the bars in agility… she seems to have a problem with the nickname of One Bar Bodhi.

So how did mum teach me to put my back paws on the stool?

Firstly we started with a shorter and larger block. And we did the step from last week and then all 4 paws up (mum even had me do a few circles up here keeping all 4 paws on).

From there mum used a treat to get front feet down while back feet stayed up. As soon as I was in this position mum gave the “yes” word and I got a treat.

We did this on the low big box for a few minutes each day for a few days until I got the hang of it. Mum also started putting the word “feet” when I was in position and then as a direction to get into position. Then we moved onto a smaller box (don’t I look proud of myself!)

Gotta say mum is also super proud of me doing this. We have been working on this on and off for ages. She is also hoping all this back end awareness is going to pay off with a Triple Jumping Trial this coming weekend…. just need one more Novice Jumping Quallie for my 1st Agility Title (watch this space for Sunday morning wrap up).

Another Tuesday Training that is a bit more of our serious agility Training Tips 1st World Dog Style (as well as sharing with you guys we use the blog as a way to collect all the things that we learn) but hopefully you find them still fun and also good mental stimulation. There are plenty of other fun things to try over on the Training Tips page so be sure to check them out and if you take videos or photos of you doing any of them be sure to send them over.
